What's Happening in Woodland Hills

A lot goes on in the Woodland Hills School District! Composed of 12 municipalities and boroughs, the District is home to many diverse communities, so there is no surprise that something new always is happening in the area. Below you can find a sampling of news and events that occur in our district.

April 11, 2010: "Outstanding Young Citizen Nominees"
Congratulations to Jonathon Droznenk and Zachary Jessell, Woodland Hills High School seniors, who were recently recognized by the Tribune Review with "Outstanding Young Citizen Awards." In order to be nominated for this award, students must not only have good academic records but also demonstrate community involvement. Zach was presented with the award in a ceremony at the high school. A $200 check was also presented to the Woodland Hills Athletic Fund. At the assembly, all of the winter sport athletes were honored and the students who represented the District at the PIAA Championships in swimming, rifle and bowling were recognized.

As was announced in March, the Woodland Hills Academy opened Aug. 3 in the old East Junior High School in Turtle Creek. The new school boasts longer days and a longer year, as well as introducing foreign language and technology as early as kindergarten. The Academy is in its inaugural run for the 2009-10 school year.

March 12, 2009: "Woodland Hills OKs academy"
The Woodland Hill School District School Board voted to create a K-6 academy, the Woodland Hills Academy. The school will feature longer school days and a longer school year as well as incorporating technology across the curriculum and integrating foreign language at a younger age. The School Board also voted to change elementary and intermediate school buildings into K-6 schools, as well as creating a 12-hour school day for high schoolers, with the option of a 2:30 to 7 p.m. school day.

Feb. 25, 2009: John Fetterman
Braddock Mayor John Fetterman recently appeared as the guest on The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. Fetterman discussed with Colbert a brief history of the town of Braddock, and he explained how the community is attempting to get more people to move there to improve and rebuild the municipality.

This New York Times article focuses on the deteriorating town of Braddock, Pa. Deemed a "distressed municipality" by the state for decades, Braddock seems to be on the up and up, thanks to its Mayor John Fetterman. Fetterman has invested his own money into projects to restore the town, and he has enlisted help from various community operations and foundations to turn this former steel town around.

Congratulations to Woodland Hills High School alumni Ryan Mundy of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Steve Breaston of the Arizona Cardinals for making it to Super Bowl! The former Woodland Hills High School and University of Michigan teammates faced off in Super Bowl XLIII.
